About Dr. McCrory

Pamela McCrory, Ph.D. has been in private practice as a psychologist for 28 years, working with individuals, couples and families to help them increase wellbeing, understand the connection between physical and emotional health, strengthen their relationship bonds, and promote their lifelong development. Dr. McCrory is Past President of The Los Angeles County Psychological Association and serves on its Board of Directors. She teaches in the Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. She has a lifelong interest in the integration of psychology, creativity and the arts, an area in which she has frequently written, given presentations and created community projects.

Recent Projects

APA Community Art Project

Dr. McCrory is Co-Chair of the collaborative art project constructed at the 2014 APA Convention, titled Uniting Psychology: Express Yourself. The project is designed to advance the integration and synthesis of psychology and the arts by encouraging self-expression and creating a visual conversation about the meaning and future of psychology. The eBook co-designed and edited by Dr. McCrory includes her essay about the project and the collection of “lotus blossoms” covered with art which make up the sculpture created with internationally known, Boston based artist Mark Cooper. The completed community art project will stand in the APA headquarters as a reminder of psychologists vision, creativity, passion and potential.

Mirrors of the Mind:
The Psychotherapist as Artist

Dr. McCrory is co-editor of the 2015 book, Mirrors of the Mind 3: The Psychotherapist as Artist, which celebrates creativity and the power of art to create empathy and enrich understanding of psychology and psychotherapy through unique perspectives of psychotherapists. This exhibition book was produced by the Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) and contains the art and accompanying artist statements exhibited at Art Share LA in 2013. The art and the artist self-reflections provide a rare opportunity for colleagues and the community at large to explore a variety of themes ranging from mental illness, loss, social protest, parenting, spirituality and reverence in the human connection with nature.

Mirrors of the Mind:
The Psychotherapist as Artist

Dr. McCrory is co-founder and co-curator of this juried gallery exhibition of art created by psychologists, psychotherapists and students sponsored by the Los Angeles County Psychological Association held at Art Share LA. Now in its seventh year, this successful event has received national attention and was featured in the American Psychological Association Monitor on Psychology as a project in which psychologists are using the arts to beautify and strengthen communities across the country. The project is grounded in the belief that art is a universal way to make meaning of our experience, to enlarge our world, to create opportunity for empathy and to celebrate our shared humanity as well as our diverse perspectives.
